Barista at the Good and Strong Cafe

The Job:

A&K’s Good and Strong Coffee Shop is looking for an energetic, enthusiastic people-person, passionate about the mission of Mi Work Matters. A commitment to excellent customer service, crafting exemplary beverages in an efficient manner, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work alongside team members with and without disabilities is required. All tasks must be done with the end goal in mind — to provide job skills and work opportunities to help adults with developmental disabilities thrive in our supported employment program at the coffee shop and beyond. 

Responsible for preparing made-to-order food and beverages in an organized, efficient, and safe way for coffee shop guests. Other daily requirements include greeting customers, maintaining a positive atmosphere in the cafe, taking orders, performing cashier duties accurately, cleaning, and independently assisting with opening and closing the cafe. Our cafe team members and team supervisors power our cafe; creating delicious food and drinks, as well as creating a positive, inclusive, and safe space where everyone feels welcome!

Job duties and required skills also include, but are not limited to:

A positive, energetic, get-it-done attitude:

  • Taking and completing orders with accuracy

  • Staying focused and positive while working in a fast-paced, social environment

  • Keeping a positive and helpful attitude with customers, team members, support professionals, and management

  • Working effectively as part of a team

  • Interacting with unhappy customers in a constructive way

  • Willingness to regularly complete messy tasks (i.e. washing dishes and sinks, wiping the inside of fridges/freezers, cleaning behind bar fridges, etc.)

  • Modeling patience, kindness, growth mindset, and creative problem solving at all times

Safety and cleanliness:

  • Following safe food handling practices (i.e. clean work clothes, proper hand washing and glove use, monitoring temperatures of hot foods, sinks, refrigerators, and freezers, etc.)

  • Work in an organized and clean fashion with the utmost respect for your guests, peers, equipment, and workspace checking on the dining space for cleanliness often 

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment for extended periods of time to meet high volume business

  • Safely handling hot items and sharp items on a regular basis using restaurant kitchen safety lingo such as “behind”, “sharp”, “door”, “corner” when applicable

  • Safely navigating a small kitchen and prep space with other busy employees

  • Prepping food safely and efficiently (i.e. washing and slicing tomatoes, onions, and lettuce, following food safety protocols, etc.).

  • Upselling

  • Maintaining current knowledge on drink menu items and educating customers where applicable

  • Maintain professional attitude

  • Maintain excellent attendance and punctuality. Ensure accurate recording of personal timesheets daily 

Learning and managing tasks:

  • Quickly changing tasks, multitasking, and prioritizing tasks

  • Desire to learn new skills, try new techniques, and complete ongoing training activities as needed

  • Learning our menu options for taking and preparing orders and for customer assistance

  • Following various multi-step recipes to prepare made-to-order drinks and food items in a consistent, timely manner (i.e. making and cutting sandwiches, combining smoothie ingredients, etc.)

  • Problem solving/ timely communication when issues arise

Completing certain key tasks:

  • Using a tablet and printed order tickets to accurately enter, check, and understand customer orders

  • Counting money accurately in a timely manner

  • Ability to open and close the shop independently

  • Bending, stooping, or reaching (i.e. frequent restocking of supplies and merchandise, cleaning, etc.),

  • Some repetitive motions (i.e. wiping surfaces, mopping, vacuuming, assembling orders, etc),

  • Safely lifting, carrying, and/or maneuvering up to 25 lbs (taking trash and recycling to outside waste disposal area, emptying the mop bucket, moving supplies, equipment, and store fixtures, etc).

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • High energy, confidence, strong professional communication skills

  • Food and beverage preparation strongly preferred

  • Support of people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities strongly preferred

  • Customer service skills necessary

Schedule and Compensation:

Full time. 4/5 shifts per week Monday through Friday with the hours of operation currently 8:15am-4:45pm. Availability for covering occasional call-ins Monday-Friday, 8:15am to 4:45pm, strongly preferred. Shifts will typically be 8.25 hours long, depending on season and business need, subject to change.

Pay rate for this position is $13-14 per hour based on experience. Perks include: snacks, meals, employee discounts – and making a difference every day!
